Somerset families go wild toge

Family bonds between Somerset kids and their dads will grow stronger as two South West projects share £220,000 in BIG Lottery Fund good cause money.

The funding, from BIG’s Family Learning initiative, supports projects and organisations that bring adults and children together to improve their skills and knowledge.

The Dad’s Go Wild project from Somerset Wildlife Trust aims to bring fathers and their children together through shared enjoyment of the great outdoors. The Big Lottery boost of £55,875 will be focused on dads and their youngsters from the four most deprived wards in Somerset - Bridgewater, Williton, Cheddar and Castle Cary. The project will offer a range of activities including orienteering, bug hunts, badger watching and learning survival skills. Fathers will be encouraged to get more involved in their children’s development, while learning or rediscovering new skills and abilities themselves.

Meanwhile, A whopping £164,295 award to CLOWNS (Creating Learning Opportunities in Western Somerset for Children and Adults) will see entire families getting active and learning about healthy eating. An outreach support van will travel to West Somerset villages giving isolated families the opportunity to participate in weekly physical activity sessions at their local village halls, schools or children’s centres.

Parents, grandparents, carers and children aged up to four years old will share the themed sessions that aim to educate in areas of healthy living and eating as well as early literacy and numeracy.
