15-year-old Akram Hussain (of Stepney Green School) has been elected as only the second ever Young Mayor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Alex Kuye (of Swanlea School) and Faiza Mukith (of Langdon Park School) who are both 16 have been elected as his Deputies. They will take over from the current young mayor in March.
Dr Ute Navidi, Director of London Play, says: “London Play congratulates Akram Hussain on his election as Tower Hamlets Young Mayor, and Alex Kuye and Faiza Mukith as his Deputies, and indeed all the young people who took part in the election process by nominating a young person, by running as a candidate or by voting. We believe it is very important for young people to be given the opportunity to take part in political institutions so that they can make decisions about issues that affect their lives including the lack of play opportunities and play spaces in the capital. We hope that all three will take a very active interest in Tower Hamlets play opportunities, especially Glamis Road Adventure Playground which was the 2007 winner of London Play’s prestigious Adventure Playground of the Year Award. Children and young people are the experts when it comes to these issues and we hope that more boroughs in the future will appoint young mayors. We very much welcome the opportunity of working with these young ambassadors in the future.” |
